Jacques Audiard’s first Spanish-language film
Story
In Mexico, a lawyer receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian offers brief footage of 12 films he’s screening at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous, strangely erotic Misericordia. A French magazine cover misspells the Indian city as “Dehli.” Latin features Verde: La Bamba Remake, Tarantino Has a BIG Mouth, Jenna & Selena Shock! (2024).
El Trio, written by Camille, Clément Ducol and Jacques Audiard, and played by Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana
Emilia Pérez is a 2024 musical drama film starring Zoe Saldana as Rita, a lawyer who goes about her job until a drug lord kidnaps her and demands a sex change. Alongside this, Selena Gomez plays Jessi, the drug lord’s wife, who is adjusting to a new life with the children she raised with her after a sex change she knows nothing about. Then, of course, Karla Sofía Gascón plays Emilia Pérez, the drug lord who has changed her gender and continues to build her (no longer her) empire. Most of the story is driven by musical numbers, so if you don’t like such a genre, you might want to stay away from it.
Now, why do I say “some”?
This film in particular had a very strange effect on me after it was over, as I went into it blindly, and quite honestly, you have to, as the film is mostly very unexpected and quite funny in places. too. After the director and cast introduced us to the film, the film began and the audience spread their name and excitement about some aspects of the film and I appreciate that. The best part of the film is the amazing cinematography (which fell flat to say the least), the strong acting from all the characters involved and some musical numbers.
If you like musicals, try Emilia Pérez
Most of these are very great and add to the story but as the film progressed, the musical numbers became much less prominent than before and thus seemed cliched. I found the musical performance at the end boring but I think it summed up the story a little. But don’t listen to me because everyone has a movie and I honestly liked some elements of this film and I think most of you will too when it comes out soon. Overall, “Emilia Pérez”, although not as much as I had hoped, is still a cinematic achievement in terms of the musical numbers and great acting which makes the film even more engaging and entertaining.

I think she successfully delivers what audiences can expect from her: London Film Festival Opening Gala.
